I was the kid in school who lived in the woodshop. Unfortunately it is now a defunct entity in our school systems, too bad.
I graduated from the University of Denver in 1974 with a fine arts degree in studio sculpture and design.
I started working for one of Denver’s finest woodworkers, a 65-year-old Hungarian immigrant who was a world-class master woodworker.
Two years after that I started my own business building custom furniture. I won some awards and built some well received things.
Eight years later I developed a series of designs for interior architectural components and began marketing and manufacturing on a national basis.
20 years after that I had had enough of the large scale national manufacturing and sold the business. We had sold our fireplace mantels, raised pannel walls and trim moldings to every state including Hawaii and Alaska and six foreign countries. At its peak there were 30 employees and I was becoming anything but a woodworker/sculptor.
After I sold the factory I began sculpting in clay and having my pieces cast. I made about 20 masters. These pieces were popular but the market for these items was struggling because of import competition.
So about eight years ago I started brewing my own beer. I mean why not? I joined the Treasure Coast Brewmasters Club since I now live on the East Coast of Florida in the nice little town of Jensen Beach in the area known as the Treasure Coast.
Ever notice how things seem to come around in circles? My beer brewing led me to the need for beer tap handles for my kegerator and that brought me back to my first love woodworking and now I’m a full time woodturner and a member of the Treasure Coast Woodturners Guild and The American Association of Woodturners designing and building beautiful beer taps (and other things) everyday.
Oh and I still brew beer and I’ve been lucky enough to win a few awards doing that too.
Thanks, John Doty
